This. You can just rent a large home for the holidays. You don't need to commit to one location. And trust me, your kids and grandkids will be far more likely to join and visit if its in a new and fun location.

To the poster who says this is supposed to be a DMV site -- I'm actually in Massachusetts thinking of getting an apartment in Boston in the next few years. There are people on these forums from all over.

We are doing it this fall! Just moving into downtown from NW. We are only 53 so still work but the kids are all in/out of college. Last one starts soph. year and won't be coming home next summer. We have a beach house to gather but sold our house and down to 1 car!

We had thought about it but nice condos -certainly ones with three bedrooms to accommodate the kids when they visit- in the city are not cheap. Our current house is in a close-in suburb walkable to Bethesda metro, so we will probably just stay here. I would prefer to live in Kalorama, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

I don't think you need to be the one to host large family gatherings. Move to the city - you'll walk, go to museums, shows, whatever, be near world class hospitals, amazing food, etc.

Let a younger generation with a house in the suburbs host. You can host the smaller things.

This is literally what I daydream about on daily basis. Except I already live in the city and would plan to move closer in (to a condo instead of a house). I want to ditch the car, get an e-bike or moped and rent a car when I really need one for day trips or whatever. I seriously can't wait.

Yes we are moving to NYC in a few years. Will be in our early 50s. Keeping a house in the burbs too.

I read too many Elin Hilderbrand books. When I'm an empty nester, I want to move to a small cottage along the coast. A small beach community, but then live there year round as a local or townie.

My ILs also got a smaller place in NY. We see them more than ever before. And I know it's been great for them to reconnect with friends and extended family, as everyone always wants to visit.

Are you talking about keeping your home in the ‘burbs and getting a second home in the city? How far apart would the homes be? That doesn’t make sense to me. If I were you, I’d make a clean break - sell the ‘burbs and move in.

My in-laws did this! Moved to UWS NYC for a few years aged 65-70. Walked everywhere, so much culture/events. Kept them young. Could still see friends on the suburbs without too much trouble.

After watching them, I think about doing the same when it’s my turn!

Anyone else considering it? We've been in the suburbs for 25 years and are looking forward to having an apartment in the city with so much walkability and culture nearby. Hoping we are in a financial position to keep our current house or downsize, so we have something to escape to and host larger family gatherings over time.
