OP here. This is a great list! Of Mercer is closed but I now have my itinerary for the afternoon. My hope is to find things I won’t see easily find in DC, but honestly even a few hours at some the chain retailers is wonderful! Fingers crossed for a few finds.

The Saks Off Fifth on 57th is enormous and has a good selection. The Bloomingdales Outlet near Columbus Circle is also great.

I would take the train to soho and shop the boutiques: Faconeri is great for business casual, VB has great pants shirts and blazers, Snidel is a Japanese boutique that has great relaxed fits, I also like French houses: Maje, Sandro, Iro, Isabel Marant.

It sounded to me as if she had time to shop while in NYC and was looking for convenient places not far from Times Square.
OP, if you're looking for boutique shopping for things you may not find in malls everywhere, then consider Nolita, Dumbo, Caroll Gardens, or Cobble Hill. They're all easily accessible by subway from Times Square station.

Sarah Flint for shoes. You will never regret it. The other PP is right in that the clothing suggestions are fairly ubiquitous unless it's for something like a really cool leather jacket. The branch stores in NYC cater to a forward fashion crowd for the higher end stuff.

Saks is having sales right now. There are also Banana Republic and J.Crew stores near there is Rockefeller Plaza.
If you head up to Columbus Circle, you can check out Nordstrom. The TJ Maxx near there is hit or miss, but they have a "runway" section where you can often find nicer pieces at great prices. The Deutsche Bank Center is right there and has J.Crew and Hugo Boss.
