Richmond's traffic is so light compared to around here that it really doesn't matter where you stay.
The Embassy Suites West End might be useful for having just one suite + free breakfast.
Lots of good restaturants out that way, too.

Perly's is great but can have epic waits. Nate's in Cary is great for picking up bagel sandwiches.

I won’t drive in DC or NYC, or most cities for that matter, but found Richmond very easy to navigate when I took DC to visit VCU (and I don’t remember where we stayed, so I can’t help there).

If your family likes museums the Virginia Museum Of Fine Arts is great.

Loved The Boulevard Inn and a restaurant called Lunch Supper. Just a cool little place with great food. Rowland is also a good restaurant. All near VCU.

I agree with a pp that I’ve never found traffic IN Richmond to be bad. Driving around it or past it on 95 is another story. Also never had a problem finding street parking. Such a weird experience coming from DC.

I typically sleep in the suburbs because I'm visiting people out there, but I think you should make it a long weekend if possible. There's lots of variety in terms of things to do and see in Richmond.

I feel like Richmond is really easy to navigate and traffic has never seemed bad to me. We enjoyed the location and scenery of the Jefferson and the rooms were beautiful, but I was shocked at how terrible the beds were. There are also a lot of homeless people in the area, along with some great restaurants in walking distance. The restaurant at The Jefferson is great (Lemaire $$$$).

When we stay in the West End we usually stay at the Residence Inn Midwtown. There is also a Westin. There are no hotels right at UofR but nothing is that far. The two campus areas are very different! There are some great little restaurants near there too. Toast is great for brunch.

Linden Row or the Jefferson Hotel are close to VCU. Perlys diner is great for breakfast. Cary Street would be on your way to/from VCU and U of R. Lots of restaurants there.

We really liked the Quirk and there are a lot of walkable restaurant options around.

We are starting off a round of college tours with U of Richmond and VCU, either both in one day or an afternoon and the following morning. Either way, we’d need a hotel for 1 or 2 nights, plus 2-3 meals. Any suggestions for places to stay or eat? Bonus points for being near one school or the other. Anyone familiar with daytime, weekday (probably Thursday) traffic if we try to do both schools in one day? The second tour would be at 2 or 2:30, with the morning tour wrapping up probably 12/12:30, and we’d want at least a quick lunch (although we’d probably do that on campus if possible).

I’m sad to say that I’ve lived in NoVA for my entire 45+ years and I’ve never actually visited Richmond, so any suggestions are welcome. TIA!
