Does he have a clearance? I'm looking for an experienced Software Engineer - clearance isn't a requirement, but is a nice-to-have.

Look for job everywhere: Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor

Don't lower salary! You need to do some research to figure out what the current market supports (who knows, maybe he was even underpaid and will get a bump).

Check ads, and tailor resume to highlight matches.

Use your networks -- friends, and friends of friends. Get the word out that you are looking for work -- there is no shame.

If you are looking for a coding job, be prepared for doing a coding challenge on the spot. If you've been off the market for 10-20 years, its a big difference -- you don't just talk about your experiences, you need to prove that you can code effecdtively with a challenge. Get on LeetCode and practice.

Good luck! All of those jobs are being offshored to India and replaced with AI.

Have him be open to relocate to areas you would be open to move to but send him ahead to an area for 6 months to a year before relocating a family and family home. Moving is expensive, companies are capricious, and probationary periods are real.

Consider repositioning to places that meet your retirement goals, family goals, cost of living improvements, cheaper college tuition, etc.

Be sure to list his key software skills in the profile - languages, compilers, debuggers, platforms. A lot of companies are using keyword filters in their searches.

Omit dates on listed degrees. Consider deleting first few jobs if he has had several, because not relevant and he wants to minimize age discrimination.

I'm so sorry. I agree that a recruiter is the best path forward.

Yes recruiters are a good place to start. If nothing else talking to the recruiter will help him refine his next steps.

The logistics are very case to case. Will you move? If that is a viable option for your family situation, maybe. Will he take a lower pay? Well how much do you make and how much do you jointly need? These answers are something you have to decide together.

Im sorry.

How do middle aged, super experienced software engineers find jobs nowadays? Should he contact a recruiter? What are the best websites for job hunting? Should he be open to relocate all over the country? Lower his salaries? Sorry for the babbling, I guess I am still in shock.
