Oh, I'd discounted Pittsburgh because OP said they wanted to be east of Harrisburg. But yeah, Pittsburgh is definitely the answer. Good neighborhoods, good food, good museums.

If you want to try for something outdoors, you could check out Oglebay in WV - I haven't ever been and reviews are a bit mixed. But if you are open to kind of kitsch-y, it could be fun.

We do this trip a lot and stop in Pittsburgh. Are you traveling with all adults or with kids? Carnegie Science Center and Museum of Natural Science and History are excellent, we like riding the funicular to get a view of the city, in the winter PPG has a great outdoor ice skating rink.

I've never stayed at Nemacolin, Omni Bedford Springs or Seven Springs but those are all a long the drive easy on the PS turnpike

I’m from central Ohio and all of my family is in Cleveland. Not only is Hocking Hills not 3 hours west of Cleveland (check a map), but it’s also not worth a day trip from there.

Hocking Hills is 3 hours west from Cleveland. Very fun and impressive light hiking - water carved rocks and a fern-laden biome. But seems to be surrounded by an impoverished area. We stayed at a "Suites" type place.

Falling Waters is near Ohiopyle State Park and Nemacolin

Visiting family in Cleveland and want to take a small side trip on our way or on our way home.

Parameters:

East Ohio (obviously not Cleveland)

or

Extreme West New York (NOT Niagara, and not as far as the Finger Lakes unless it’s one of the more Western ones)

or Pennsylvania (prefer something east of Harrisburg)

We prefer it to be something related to nature, but are open to interesting towns or some other point of interest

Also would enjoy a resort where all activities are on property

Brand hotels would be a plus, or a decent resort, as mentioned above
