Grew up there. It does get hot, but more importantly, Croatia has been completely overrun by tourists, and those are the worst two months to go.
DP - …but if the only time you can go is July or August, it’s totally fine.
We were there in mid/late July and didn’t find it too crowded to have fun.
The waterfront destinations and islands are very much season-based tourist destinations—meaning everything won’t be open if you outside of the summer season.
You will want to swim and you should definitely charter a boat or two.
There are plenty of YouTube videos of people traveling at various times of the year, and it looks not very fun to be there in a cool, cold, or rainy period.
Re: the heat - you sightsee early in the day and explore after dark. You hit the beach when it’s hot. Regardless, the heat didn’t bother us.
