One sat down, took the test and got a 1590. Done. This twin is whip smart with a mind like a steel trip, no anxiety, fantastic test taker.

The second twin started with a 1250. I paid for about 30 hours of in person tutoring. The kid would take practice tests every Saturday and then sit with the tutor and go through the wrong answers. About a 3K investment for the tutor's time. Took the test 5 times and got the score up to a 1550.

I know it may sound like I'm making this up but it genuinely happened. I will say that my kid who got the one time 1590 score is absolutely the smarter kid (no, I've never verbalize this to them) but it has become obvious over time that kid #1 is just at a next level with regard to intelligence. Kid#2 compensates by being a really hard worker. Having twins adds a new dimension to the college process.

Interesting. What other "studies" have you conducted on them and academics/personality?

I'm 11:06. We used Prep Matters, because we live next door and they're very good (but very expensive).

Thanks for this insight. It tracks with what I’m seeing in my two children as well.

Not looking for perfect. Just high score. 1300 or above. But yeah it depends on the student and how motivated they are to do well, etc.

My severely ADHD kid needed a ton of one-on-one prep with an expensive tutor. He got a 35 out of 36 on his ACT, which is equivalent to a 1530-1560 on the SAT.

My younger kid is gifted and will probably not need much preparation at all. She breezes through all her advanced academics without breaking a sweat.

Some kids are good at taking standardized tests, have no test anxiety AND are really smart. When you combine those three things, easy to score high.

OP, all the things you mention will work if they are a good fit for how the kid studies and the kid actually has the capability to score high. It depends on the student.

Plus, are you asking about scores of 1400+ or are you asking about near perfect? Not the same thing.

So there is success in using Bluebook then…good to know!

Some kids are good at taking tests. Mine did a little prep on his own (practice tests in Bluebook) and got a low 1500s score, and then I got him a few sessions with a tutor and he got a 1590 the next time. But he enjoys that kind of thing.

Other kid wasn’t into it and I paid him $15/hr to do Kahn academy practice. Was way cheaper than tutoring and motivated him enough to do a little prep. He did fine and only took the sat once.

Did you throw money at tons of tutoring? Was your kid self motivated and used Kahn Acadeny or something else to prepare? Did they use AI? Was it be super they were always in private school and had that advantage? Or simply because they are super smart and hardworking and just took the test once or twice and got a great score of 1400 or above?

What is the true secret of success?
