They're going to do this but call them regions instead. Each region will have special programs.

Yes, this seems to be the direction Taylor wants to go in. Hopefully the consortiums are smaller than the DCC. I think the DCC doesn't work so great great because it's too big. If there are more than 3 high schools in the consortium, it's too big.

Who said the DCC doesn't work so great?

Many people. Who said it works great?

Many people. If you want to go to your home Hs no one is stopping you.

Welcome to the Whitman/BCC/Blair region!

They cost MCPS millions in transportation costs per year while also completely killing the feeling of community in schools.

To be fair, I think private schools are doing that more than the consortiums.

No, the consortia is definitely hurting that feeling of community. In my neighborhood alone, we have kids split between Northwood, Kennedy, Blair and Wheaton. There's no way you can build community when kids from that same neighborhood are split across that many schools.

I’m in the NEC and more than half of the kids in the neighborhood are in private school. Those kids don’t even know their neighbors.

Yeah I don’t know. Here in DTSS we have people zoned for all kinds of different high school despite living super close to each other. I know only a minority of students get into immersion, but my kids attend a program that is walkable to our house but zoned for all different schools. The DCC gives us a sense of being able to opt to stay with friends in high school, so it does serve a sense of community for us. I know we’re a minority but I also think the geography is complicated and weird in this part of town.

I am surprised to see adding sections of the county TO Blair is in play and I know there are many in the southern/eastern part of the county for whom it is the closest high school who would like to see this done more logically here. SCES is currently split Blair/Northwood and I would love to see it all go to Blair, however option 3 just sends more but not all SCES kids to Blair and directs them through Eastern instead of the on site SSIMS first. Weird.

I like the idea of more consortiums. They need another school in the NEC.

Are there ways new/different consortia could be designed that would make big boundary changes like Woodward option 3 more acceptable? Like, if you got reassigned to a high school further away but had a decent shot at getting to go to one closer to you if you ranked it #1, would that help?

And how would you suggest grouping the high schools if you got to choose?
