My kid, who scored just over 500 on last year’s 4th grade SOL, got a 600 on the 6th grade SOL. No idea why or how. I suspect a lot depends on the teacher and each kid’s areas of strength.

My 7th grader went from 600 to a lower pass advanced when the SOL skipped up from 4th to 6th. But I imagine this varies by kid.

Of course, there will always be exceptions, but it seems reasonable that scores might drop the first year students move up to a higher grade level on the SOL. My child also went from "Advanced" to "Proficient," but it was only about a 20-point drop—which feels somewhat arbitrary.

I’d be more concerned if a downward trend continued in the future, but I’m not going to split hairs over it during the 5th grade year, when they’re making that initial jump.

My kids score was better on the 6th grade SOL then the 4th grade SOL. He has always passed advanced on the SOL.

Mine got advanced on the 6th grade test this year, but math is by far his favorite subject.

Could have been poor preparation in the classroom, might have missed a couple early questions (it's adaptive). You should be able to ask the teacher for the score report--I sent them home with my kids. It shows what topics the student missed questions on.

Same situation here. My kid said Math SOL is harder this year.

My kids have always gotten pass-advanced, usually close to 600. The only exception was the first year back in school after Covid.

But not every kid takes tests well, or is as comfortable with the material. If they are struggling in class, I wouldn’t think much of it

I guess it depends. My kids also 5th AAP got the highest math sol 6th math score (also advanced pass). For comparison, DD also got passed advanced for 3th and 4th math SOL

For AAP, 5th graders take the 6th grade SOL. is it typical for a 5th grader to score Pass-Proficient in Math or should they be scoring Pass-Advanced? My kid is in the situation. Her Math SOL took a nose dive this year in 5th grade. She scored Pass-Advanced in 3rd and 4th.
