Started as an English and Religion double major. Now double majoring in English and Chemistry.

Mine wanted business analytics when he applied. Now in the business school for business analytics.

My premed had a great year, thrived in prof and sticking with it. His good friend was thinking law school but wanted to give some pre-med req classes a try and it didn’t go well. Feel bad for them as law is so gpa focused just like med school.

my kid applied as an enviro major since that was his spike. at a hyp and switched out to applied math/econ/cs

One of mine went in undecided, so yes, that changed, thankfully. The other was CS all the way, but added two interesting minors.

Both of mine. One in a science and one IR. We worked hard with them in high school to identify aptitudes and what subjects they loved and show them ways to make it a career. Both stuck with their plans. But it would have been fine if they hadn’t.

Both of mine stayed in their intended majors, one after 2 years and one just graduated.

The new grad was a data-science type major and is now starting a job as a data scientist. He always liked math, stats etc. and did a pre-college program about data science, which helped him understand what it was.

Rising junior is an environmental science major, took a class in it in HS and also did a pre-college program that confirmed her interest.

Both took a while to settle on specific concentrations within their majors but never considered switching from the major. Data science major ended up with a concentration in cybersecurity/cryptography (after starting thinking it would be more geographic data). ES major initially thought she'd focus specifically on ecological restoration but is now more interested in water systems.

I think many change their majors but probably within the same school or similar majors: so Eng to CS or Econ to Accounting. I don't think switching from humanities to hard science or vice versa is that common, though I do know two people who went from CS to Law, and philosophy (prelaw) to CS, however philosophy majors can make really good programmers.

80% of freshman students intended to be a premed got weed-out at the end of the first year. Yes, they do change major.

Son went in as a finance major but pivoted to accounting sophomore year; he’s not at a finance target school and realized accounting will (hopefully) be more marketable.
