It isn’t one kid. Who would think it was? The HS college counselor said that school has never accepted anyone from our public school.

At a magnet and some top schools including ivies visit, and some others never seem to land. I’d think best shot is very tailored essays, seeing if any local visits (sometimes colleges will do panels at area schools you can go to), a visit and maybe seeing if you can connect with admissions somehow (harder to do at top schools).

Vanderbilt is infamous for yielding protection, so it makes sense. One of the reasons they ended up going from accepting over 60% of all applicants in the early 2000s to less than 6% today.

I agree with this. It worked for my son at a school that was a very fit for him but hadn’t taken anyone from our high school in the last five years. He was hopeful but certainly wasn’t counting on admission.

I’ve done that. 1570-1590 SAT and a top gpa for the school. I know the gpa was top bc the college counselor said so.

Clearly there are magnet schools, but how to overcome coming from a HS which has never had a kid accepted from this or that school?
