It was disappointing. These movies are supposed to be fun, but it was alternately boring or too intense (the underwater scenes) to be enjoyable. And like a PP says, Cruise is made out to be the messiah. The film took itself way too seriously. It was just an ego trip.

I saw it today. This was such a silly movie, but I guess it’s fun enough if you just want to watch ridiculous action sequences for 3 hours. The story is convoluted, so many plot holes, a couple outright annoying characters (really tempted to throw popcorn anytime Gabriel was onscreen), and Tom Cruise is just getting too old to run in his underwear (loose skin bouncing is not hot). And his soft old man skin can’t handle anymore skydiving or hanging-off-the-side-of-a-plane stunts. The skin flapping…I’m telling you…not good.

MI was good..long though 2 hours and 49 minutes. Lilo and Stich was horrible but surpassed MI ticket sales for weekend. Shocker.

Tom Cruise is one of the Last Movie Stars. His personal life is crazy, but man, the guy has so much charisma.

I find that live action remakes of animated originals are always disappointing. It's sad that Disney is resorting to those to paper over a lack of imagination and creative juice.

While I’m fond of Lilo and Stitch, it definitely was on the downward slope of animation. It had a fun story, and a great anti-hero but it felt like a DTV production. It was drawn in the basement of the Florida theme park in between the rides. But it was scrappy and the story carried on. https://www.polygon.com/features/22675483/lilo-and-stitch-disney-animation-chris-sanders-dean-deblois

I wonder if they had done a scene by scene exact dialogue version but with better animation how that would fare? Is there value in that? Live action Jungle Book was great — why did that work?

I couldn't disagree more, I loved the watercolor stylistic choice

I agree with the bolded. But to get back to Mission Impossible, yes, go and see it, OP!

It's better when Disney comes up with something fresh like Enchanted.

I wasn't crazy about the last one but loved this one! I will be seeing it again sometime this week with the kids.

My kids and I loved it.

This MI is special because the script was written to refer to loose threads of previous MI plots and retrace the arc of Ethan's career. There's definitely an element of nostalgia and narrative arc coming to an end.

It's also unintentionally funny, because Tom Cruise seizes his last chance at showing off, doing his fun run several times, and fighting and arctic diving nearly naked, which leads to scenes that are even more unrealistic than usual but that we found hilarious just because they're over-the-top. All MI movies that follow the original need to be watched while making fun of TC, you see. My daughter calls MI2 the "hair commercial" because that's when he and his romantic partner slide around in cars on hairpin bends while tossing their hair around.

Apparently during filming TC blacked out while cavorting on the wing of the biplane, and McQuarrie thought he'd fall right off while in flight. But he woke up and didn't. It's interesting to know this and see the action on the big screen.

Go for funsies. It's the end of an era and the stunts deliver.

It's got some great action scenes so it's not all bad but I was disappointed. Compared with the last film, which I really loved, it's quite talky and serious when I think the MI films should just be fun even if it's about the world blowing up or whatever. In this movie it's like Tom Cruise is the Messiah. It wasn't terrible--it's a high-quality production, definitely has some merit--but I probably won't feel the need to watch it again.

Has anyone seen the latest Mission Impossible yet, and if so how was it? I like the last one but it was a little long/draggy.

Does TC top the stunt where he drives off the cliff on a motorcylcle??
