After struggling with standard clippers, I got this clipper that is attached to a vacuum, and it is awesome for cutting my doodle’s hair. The vacuum pulls the hair up so you get a nice even clip. If my dog’s hair is very long, I have to empty the container pretty frequently, but it’s worth it to not have hair go everywhere.
I usually let my dog’s hair get a little longer in the winter and then clip it shorter for summer, but once it’s shorter I wash and clip him every two weeks and it’s very quick and easy. The plastic guards work well for me.
I also bought a small home high speed dog dryer that makes his hair very smooth (IMO, the biggest difference between a home and professional-looking clip is the effect of the dryer). My dog doesn’t get super dirty and I keep him brushed (he loves being brushed, and most nights he’ll bug me until I do it), so I do a clip, bath, dry and then another quick clip to smooth him out and it usually takes less than an hour total. We get compliments on how nice he looks all the time & the tools paid for themselves after about two clips.
