My husband coached rec and his favorite gifts were a sturdy folding bench (group gift) and REI gift cards.

I think id rather spend my money on private lessons with the new coach taking over next season.

Rec coaches and managers are volunteers.

God forbid you show the tiniest bit of appreciation for what they do for your kid.

I’m a rec coach (volunteer) and don’t drink. My team usually gets me a gift card- it’s totally fine to do that! I’m appreciative of whatever.

Are you new to the customs of this country?

This. Made very clear that it was completely optional, yet people were quick to chip in.

Yes! We have always done for the rec volunteer coaches. Totally open to hearing a dollar about for travel. Feels a little weird since they are paid and influence what team our child lands on!

We are new to travel so hasn’t come up yet
But we’ve done rec for years and yes a gift is customary. They volunteer their time and it’s nice to show appreciation.
I’m not sure why you think a gift card is impersonal OP? We’ve always done a gift card to Dicks sports, or a local restaurant in Olney. ( we’re with OBGC)

Team managers will often collect for a collective gift.

We are new and this never crossed my mind for our travel daughter. Is it common to give the coaches gifts?

I usually get our DD's coach a year-end gift to thank him/her for their work with my DD and her team over the year, nothing crazy (no Lexuses), just like a card and a decent bottle of liquor or wine. My DD's coach this year isn't a drinker though, and a gift card seems kind of impersonal. Thoughts on alternatives?
