Not sure the question makes sense. Why do people travel when they could save for a house? Hopefully they are doing both. I wouldn’t opt out of life celebrations just to save money though, personally

Is flying to a destination what’s lavish, or are you saying it’s 5 star everything while there?

Vegas has been the bachelor and bachelorette capital for like 50 years…and it’s not the locals…and it hasn’t been cheap for over 20 years.

I think this is just a function of marrying when older and more settled. I married younger and we were flat broke so there was no Bachelorette weekend or even fancy dinner-- my friend hosted us at her house.

I did it for a friend and it was hard to say no. I really didn’t want to spend that much money, but she was dear to me and all my friends went. I’ll counsel my children not to do this to their friends unless they’re paying for everyone.

I hope. My DD is 23 and says she wants to go to Paris for her Bachelorette “weekend”. I say well I hope you make a lot of money to pay for it. I don’t think she would have considered asking her parents anyway but yes I think it is outrageous but she’s an adult. Can’t stop her. She otherwise seems very responsible regarding finances. I know she has a Roth, she pays off her credit card every month, etc.

Insta. Duh.

Truly. If anyone actually did this and didn’t splash it all over social media, I might believe it was for fun. But people are miserable and living their lives through their phones.

There is a reason so many people are broke.

what do you mean? are you being snarky and rude, or declining to bend to the pressure of if you really were my friend you would pay 5K to go to some dumpy town to celebrate your sad little love story?

IMO nobody who pressures you with the “if you were really my friend” deal is actually your friend. We are talking about adults here. Say you cannot make it. That’s a complete response. You can even give your specific excuse (can’t afford it, can’t leave the kids, doesn’t fit my schedule). If they don’t understand, maybe they’re not worth your friendship.

I don't think it's as common as you think once you get off SM. That said, I'm 38 and did one of these for a friend's bachelorette when we were 32. There was no pressure to go and it was a fun getaway with our close group of friends.
