Moat sixth graders struggle with comprehension and critical thinking. They choose the answer they like- not the one with text evidence. I would contact the FCPS family resource center and ask for a tutor list. Choose someone who specializes in middle grade comprehension and test skills.

We found a Spanish tutor for our DD through Wyzant. He lives 10 mins from our house so it’s very convenient. During our search, we found a lot of current and former teachers offering to tutor our DD. The rates range from $50-$90/hr. Tutors for ES/MS Math and Reading were abundant. They’re more expensive than Kumon/Mathnasium but your child will get more focused attention.

I really want to tutor your daughter. I’m also a ballet dancer and have a Masters in education. But I’m in Rockville and in-person is so much better. I hope you find someone great for her. She sounds like a hardworking girl.

389 is super close to passing. She probably missed it by 1 question. The school will pressure you/her for a retake to get their own passing rate up, but you don’t have to do it.

My DD did Mathnasium for 5th and 6th grade. It helped her a lot. You just have to make sure she asks the instructors for help and explanations; otherwise, it’s self-paced and learn on your own.

We did Kumon for reading. It wasn’t very helpful.

There is ZERO benefit to her. You know she needs help this summer shoring up her math and reading comprehension. Retaking a test to get the score above some arbitrary cut off so the school gets one more "pass" is just torture for no point.

Tell me more about this. It had not crossed my mind not to have it retake it because I was hoping she could get to the passing grade but is there really no benefit for her to do it?

OP here, sixth grade.

Reading was 389

Dont have the grade for math yet.

Was the score close to passing like 375?

Is there some underlying problem like dyslexia or ADHD or something else?

What grade?

What grade is this?

How did she do throughout the school year on tests and other assessments? What have her teachers said about her progress? That, to me, is much more important than the SOL.

In addition to other things, I am looking for tutors for DD this summer.
Recommended remediation tutors?

Thinking of mathnasium for math? Other suggestions?

What about for reading?

I have tried for years on my own and I can’t keep up with it along with work and all the house related duties that come with being a mom.

DD really needs help before it’s too late!
