We used to call gin “anger juice.” No effeminate connotations for me, pretty much the opposite. People who drank gin seemed to get into a lot of fights.

I don't drink enough to understand why this would be a cliche.

Look for occasional drinkers only and they will have zero preconceptions unless the drink is obviously ridiculous (Sex on the Beach).
