Respectfully, homicide in that neighborhood is not new or unexpected. I'm not sure why only this incident has caused you to not want to send him. This isn't even the first incident in 2025.

Yes part of the issue is that there was a lockdown during aftercare two weeks ago due to a shooting at Phelps HS (group of kids drove up and shot through the windows of the high school). Phelps is right behind TR.

The combination of these two incidents in quick succession, and the extremely violent nature of this more recent shooting, is different than the prior violence in the area. Yes there are homicides in the area, and sometimes they happen near schools during school hours (but honestly very rarely). But it is not typical for shootings to be happening *on* school property, which both of these did. And in this case right in front of a large group of students, teachers, and parents.

Of course families at the schools in this cluster are upset. What is wrong with you?

That's where the DC State golf Championship match was held too.

All the swim meets, all of the track meets, many of the baseball and softball games are in the far eastern corner or Anacostia. I think it's a combo of where they build the nice facilities, what's convenient to DCIAA staff, and some weird desire to "stick it" to the west side of town.

By "convenient to DCIAA staff," I mean their office, which is by the Arboretum. I'm not suggesting I know where the staff live.

And while that may make sense in one way, it's very DCPS to put the convenience of central staff over the time kids from all over the city spend in a bus rather than in class.

So yeah, I'd say the students that experienced this are deeply traumatized.

We are failing this generation. Full stop.

This is so horrifying.

He’s not the only one. It was an awful lot of gunshots (30-40 maybe?) and just kept going. It felt like too many to be a targeted killing and more like someone had turned into the stadium and was shooting up the track meet. Obviously turned out to be the former but I think many of us present thought we were in the midst of a mass shooting (kids and adults).

My DC was there; saw some of the shooting not the actual murder.

They are telling me things slowly.

They asked if it was ICE.

But then they seem fine. Talking to other parents and their kids are feeling the same.

Some of the parents were there thankfully.

Are some students traumatized? That remains to be seen.

Of course they will be.

This is the same complex where there was a shooting at Phelps HS very recently, maybe two weeks ago. There are multiple schools there -- Phelps HS, Two Rivers Young (PK-8), a swing space currently occupied by JO Wilson Elementary, and Browne Education Campus (PK-8).

It is good no kids have been hit with gunshots but, uh, that should not be the standard.

An adult died of a gunshot wound outside of (at?) Spingarn track.

Two Rivers-Young on one side of the street, DCPS ES track meet on the other.
