it's normal, but also seems a little excessive. Does she know what those words mean? I'd make sure she knows she is making penis and vagina jokes. And as others have said that she knows not to make them in public/at school.

Should have taught her the real names of body parts when she was younger so vagina etc wouldn't be a big deal

I don’t know if it’s normal but it is common with my 5th grader and her friends. They don’t say it to me but their group chats are filled with jokes like that so I’m imagining they say it in person amongst themselves as well.

Yeah, normal. It’s the cusp of adolescence, so curiosity and jokes about all the sexual things they’re curious about is pretty normal. I’d say that it’s less normal to openly share that stuff with parents — unless they (secretly?) want to talk about their questions and concerns. It’s also more common for boys to do this vs girls.

The “balls” jokes stuff is odd, rude, and disrespectful— IMO— and I’d put a stop to that.

Stop blaming the other kid when your child does something you don’t like. It’s not unusual for kids to try out “risqué “ jokes. Explain to her that she can’t repeat those jokes to anyone, some people might be offended. Ballz is funny to a ten year old. She’s got a sense of humor 😜

Probably normal but also annoying amongst both genders. My 10 year old boy does a limited amount of it, but learned i didnt find it funny. I still over hear him telling ball jokes with his friends. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I remember sneaking off to a certain corner of the local bookstore to read the dirty joke books when I was that age. I'm sure no one had any idea... I was extremely casual and subtle about it, wheezing and snort-laughing behind my hand, and then grabbing a Little House book if anyone came to check on me...

My son went through a phase like this, then my daughter picked up on this behavior and would giggle if he made an off cuff remark. I remind them that these kind of jokes are not appropriate, especially in front of family. It’s toned down now. I wouldn’t make a big deal but maturely let them know that it’s not ok.

Sure, we went through a phase like this. I laughed along (told a few of my own juvenile jokes if I'm being honest) and reminded her that this was only for home, and not appropriate for the public at large.

Even my 11.5 year old boy doesn't talk like this. Neither does my 15 year old. I chuckle to myself each time we are in the car and Tom Petty's Free Falling comes out and my guy friends would be yelling "Free Ballin" when I was in HS in the 90s.

My 10-year-old is coming home lately with comments like

"Oh, you said BALLZ!" (When I mention meatballs for dinner or a toy ball)
And constant comments about balls/nuts and how hilarious they are.

She seems to be getting a lot of this from one close friend, but she claims her whole group is into these jokes. Her group is just regular kids, mostly immigrants, not the popular crowd at all.

Is this typical for this age? Especially girls?

My mom terrified me growing up about participating in anything inappropriate - bad words, sexual talk, etc - and I had this guilt complex and could never fit in with others even throughout high school. So I don't want to repeat that. But also I don't want to encourage too much too soon with the sex stuff either.
