PP who posted about the downgrade. It was posted in SIS after school let out as a 580, then six months to 12 months some sort of state SOL analysis letter thing came out that had him as 575 instead -- since so minor I never followed up, also half wondered if I'm insane and it was 575 all along. SIS now says 575 too.

But I assumed it was curved and once all was said and done, he hadn't done quite as well comparatively to kids across the state so they lopped off 5 pts.

I just hope that no one that currently passed gets downgraded to Fail.

Presumably a question that was wrong was marked as right and they fixed it…

I think HS and MS students have received their preliminary scores for ages. I know that I have read about the MS and HS students getting their scores from their teachers within days of taking the SOL and them being on SIS reasonably quickly. ES parents had to wait for the scores to be finalized, which took until July most years. It is nice to see ES kids getting their preliminary scores sooner. But the scores can be adjusted based on overall test performance, dropping super easy questions and questions that were too hard.

We’ve never had preliminary scores before so this is unusual. Both of my DDs have received Reading but math is this week.

Haha, if it’s their actual score, that’s pretty funny! My middle kid scored 600 on both one year, which was cool.
Our scores (for three kids) are a mix of numbers ranging from 453-600, so I don’t think they are a placeholder.

My 4th grader got 500 even (just pass advanced) on both. The identical scores feel like maybe this score is not final and perhaps a placeholder? Anyone else seeing this?

Sooo removing bad questions rather than a curve. That makes sense.

Preliminary means it's preliminary, not official final score. The state can adjust scores at a later date if they throw out a bad question or there's some other error. I'm not sure how often that actually happens.

They adjust the scores some after all testing is done - throwing out bad questions and such. This year they released scores before testing is over and therefore before those adjustments.

Sorry OP here, but also WHY do the scores change?

Pretty much what the title says. In another thread I saw it said that the released scores are preliminary. What does this mean realistically? Are scores likely to increase/decrease and if so by how much?
