There’s a lot of girls who start volleyball at 12 years old. I’d put her in rec league and see how she likes it. Are you in Maryland or VA?

NP and to add to this, there is a lot between rec and highly competitive club teams that are expensive and travel all over. We can give you options if we know your location. There are definitely places she can play for fun and even at a decent level of competition that isn’t too competitive or crazy at the older ages.

I've seen this kind of posts on several volleyball threads already. The poster(s) claim to have knowledge of various options between rec and club, then they ride off into the sunset. Sometimes with a condescending attitude, calling everyone else uninformed. Let's see if this time is different.

I would be interested in these options. We've been in a middle tier club that travels for the sake of travelling. We go to other places to get our behinds kicked instead of getting our behinds kicked locally. I am all ears.

Thanks we’re also in Maryland but in Rockville.

It will be hard to keep your DD interested in volleyball after one season of rec. We ended up doing more than one year because we were unaware of the club scene and missed the tryouts. The rec leagues mix the players to balance the teams in terms of skill. They want competitive games, not one team that destroys the others. That means constant reshuffle of players, with beginners joining every new session (~3 months). No matter how positive you try to stay, it is clear that the games are lost by inexperienced players, despite the best efforts of the players with more experience. You won't see much of a growth after 1 year of rec.

This is where you want to look for options that give your DD some growth options. You discover clubs and you will realize that your DD (who was the advanced player in rec) is not even an intermediate club player. The rec rotation that you thought was complicated turns out to be nothing compared to how volleyball is played in club. Unless she is tall and athletic, se will end up in a mediocre club at best. If you believe she will stick with volleyball, your best option is to start club as soon as possible. The instruction is better and there will be fewer bad habits to correct.

It’s really well organized. My son plays at the club level now, but when he was just getting started, we really liked that league.

Thanks so glad to hear! I don't know any volleyball players to ask!

I agree that the leagues through Montgomery County / City of Gaithersburg are good options for beginners. Be ready to make the switch to club as soon as your DD expresses interest though. You need to learn about your club options well in advance if you want a smooth transition. Otherwise, you will be stuck in rec longer than you may want. We made that mistake and my DD is still trying to correct bad habits / instruction. Club might sound intimidating, but the skills in most clubs at that age are comparable to those you see in rec leagues. You should sign up for tryouts in November and explore your options.

Ahh so tryouts for clubs are in November? That's very good to know! Thank you so much.

Start making a list of clubs that you may be interested in and follow them on Facebook / other social media. That way you learn about clinics / leagues / tryout prep sessions / tryouts.

Maybe i9, but that is very casual, and some parents think it's not good enough. For a first sport though it could be a good entry.

My 9yo daughter has suddenly expressed interest in volleyball so I’m looking for a Fall 4th grade rec volleyball program close to Silver Spring. This is the first time she’s expressed interest in a sport so I don’t want anything to intimidating. Just a beginner, friendly, fun, welcoming environment where she can learn the basics and enjoy the game.
I’ve searched this forum and so far it seems like Ofer Levy Montgomery County rec programs are the closest and most accessible but I’m curious about the quality. Any other options I should consider?

Thanks in advance!
