I agree that meeting with a trainer is a good idea, but I spent a year meaning to do that, and finally just started some YouTube videos instead. I like this woman. She chatty and down to earth, and the focus is on functional fitness for older women. https://www.youtube.com/@strengthandbloom

She has some different series and does a good job explaining form and offering variations. I did many of her free videos and then subscribed to her channel for $5 a month. I would still like to meet with a trainer in person, eventually, but in 6 months I've really put on a lot of muscle (for me) from these videos.

Fitness Blender. They have a ton of free videos, but you can also become a paid member for a very inexpensive amount and get access to more videos and programs.

If you have access to the Peloton app, why not start with the strength workouts labeled as “Beginner”?

54 and like OP mild osteopenia and family history of osteoporosis. Prior to being diagnosed, I did primarily cardio with occasional light weights. I’ve been doing Caroline Girvan for about 8 months and have changed my body and am lifting so much heavier compared to what I was initially doing. For bone density, I been told progressive overload- heavier and lower reps.

56. Renovating a bathroom has been my strength training. I can't believe how long it is taking me to recover after a few days of labor. I can't muster the interest in running which I used to do everyday.

Either at a gym, or with what equipment you have at home if you are not able to go to a gym or don't want to go to one.

Once you learn proper form, then you can start trying different routines.

OP here. I don’t belong to a gym (I go to a yoga studio twice a week and walk the other days). Are there trainers who will come to your house? Do you have a recommendation?

In my lifetime I have used free weights as part of fitness classes, but never more than an 8-10 lb weight, and not in at least 5 years.

np Yes, there are trainers who come to your house. I share a trainer with friends and they go to my friend's house but I go to her apartment because they have a gym there with all the equipement. They are pretty busy but, you can ask around. Maybe your yoga instructors will know someone. You want to get someone who knows how to strengthen for older women, not just young guys!

Good luck!!

Facebook group “hardcore on the floor”. Under files you will find a calendar that lays out daily strength training classes from Peloton. Takes all the thought out of lifting. I’m a 55 yo women who has transformed due to this programming.

NP. I’m surprised to hear this. I have not read great things about Apple Fitness compared to Peloton. What workouts do you recommend?

Rebecca Kennedy on the peloton app does some good heavy weights classes. You need to have actual heavies to get the full benefits, though. I would try a cycle and you might consider buying heavier dumbbells (I see you have a set of weights but you don’t say how heavy they are).

I also have osteopenia and started strength classes with peloton. I think it’s a great starting place, but I needed to start with a personal trainer (I did small group personal training so more affordable) to level up.

I’d appreciate recommendations for beginning (and progressing) strength training videos. I am an over age 50 woman and was tood at my dexa scan (mild osteopenia) to incorporate some strength training.

I have access to a set of weights and the peleton app, and would consider subscribing to an online program if worth it although I am hoping I can find a good program on peleton or the web.

I appreciate your suggestions.
