My teen showed me the trailer for The Long Walk. OMG this is what I would call a horror- looks so disturbing you couldn’t pay me to watch this.
DS and DH can’t wait to see this.
They are also pumped about a new flick called Weapons, which also looks horrifying to me.

I wonder if has something to do with how hard technology (cell phones, etc) has made modern story telling. There are few unanswerable (or unresearchable, with the computer in your pocket) questions anymore. The horror genre avoids that problem. Same for comic book movies or whatever they are called.

There are a lot of horror movies out now, but I think most of them have been mediocre to bad, which is a pity, because it's my favorite genre.

Horror movies have among the best profit margins for studios.

I think they can be made relatively inexpensively and people will go to see them!

Yes I hate horrors and all the best movies on Rotten tomatoes are horror.

Recently saw the new Disney remake of Snow White, and while indeed horrible, it was not good.

I like some horror a lot and have for a long time. I prefer supernatural horror and thrillers. I think they can get at certain truths better than regular drama because the story can rely on myth and archetype to get at dark human truths or comment on society. In a way they function like fairy tales which can comment on danger, familial situations, etc., and help people process fears,.uncertainty and evil. An example would be Rosemary's Baby (and really everything by Ira Levin).but even Godzilla can be seen as a social critique. Another recent movie with a social critique is Parasite.

I think a lot of filmmakers also like these movies and have figured out what makes them good and how to write and direct them to highlight the best aspects of the genre. More Hitchcock than William Castle. I take exception to splatterfest type movies and "murder porn." I don't think these are the same thing for the most part and they are limited in what they offer and don't have much of a point beyond the gore.

No idea. But I wish there were more good comedies.

Because people will go to the movies for them. They are one of the few genres making money and getting butts in seats.

I love these movies. I wish they brought back Paranormal Activity because to me it's not been explored nearly enough.

There seems to be never ending streams of horror movies coming out every week now. And many times they're getting amazing reviews. It's like they've mostly replaced comic book films which have finally fallen to wayside. Are the 2020s the second golden age for horror films? Just this week a other Final Destination movie is out and it is getting rave reviews. Who knew that franchise still had gas, yet here we are.
