Can you be more specific? The Potomac is almost 400 miles long. People should stay out of all of it?

The falls are, on a good day, rated the highest level of difficulty for kayaking. People should definitely not go near the gorge unless they are very experienced and know what they're doing.

I was there this morning and stayed in the tow path. Started along Billy goat C and then decided it was too close to the river!

Update from today via FB:
Great Falls Park, Virginia Trail update: North Patowmack Canal Trail remains affected by flooding and closed, other trails may still have some standing water puddles or muddy conditions, low areas off River Trail, such as Fisherman's Eddy or the climbing areas at Sand Box, remain flooded, but the overlooks and most hiking trails are open. Good footwear is a must!

If you have plans to go hiking this weekend, check if the trails are open. Many on the Virginia side are flooded out.

"Swollen by days of relentless rain, the Potomac River has surged well above flood stage, creating dangerous conditions along the C&O Canal National Historical Park and prompting at least five rescues in the past 24 hours alone.
The river crested Thursday afternoon at over 23 feet in Point of Rocks, Maryland — a level not seen in many years. Entire parking areas and park facilities have been inundated as water levels rose from Harpers Ferry to Great Falls."

Driving over Chain bridge, the Potomac is twice the width as usual with very high waves, rapids and debris (even whole trees) floating down. I often see kayaks and fisherman in this part of the river, so please be careful, especially downstream where you may not be expecting the large debris to come down. I have not seen the river like this in a long time.
