Hello, Because of prices on flights, we are going to have to fly in and out of Portland. We are landing in Portland on Friday, the 20th and visiting University of Oregon Saturday and Sunday. Yes, there will be Track and Field Nationals there at that time. The reason for the increase in prices I suppose. So we'd like to stay maybe 35 minutes outside of Eugene Friday night and Saturday night and start making our way towards Portland for our return flight on Tuesday. Any thoughts on hotels Friday and Saturday a bit out of the way of Eugene and then some ideas on hotels and things to do on our way back to Portland for our return flight on Tuesday? Maybe drive the coast and stay along the coast Sunday night and Monday night? Thanks

You could do Bend or Crater Lake or a coast
trip to Yachats or Florence. Sometimes the forest fires are bad in Bend in summer, recommend skipping eastern Oregon if air quality is poor. Yachats is very cute and walkable (recommend staying at the Adobe, eating there and LunaSea). The drive between Florence and Yachats is absolutely stunning. Places to stop to play on the sand dunes and to see seal lion caves.

Thank you all for your responses. Once I get some ideas, I'll run them you all. But one Q is...if there is a track meet that will use up a lot of hotels, any ideas on a town or something maybe 45 minutes away where the rooms may be cheaper and we can use it as a home base to do other excursions? Thanks

I live in Eugene now and actually work at UO in a non-faculty position. I’d do a day trip to Crater Lake and then head to the coast and drive up to Portland, flying out of Portland. Portland is a quirky little city so I’d spend a day there. There are tons of waterfalls and forests in national parks all over the state.

I’m also happy to try to answer questions about Eugene and/or UO.

Head inland! Bend and Sisters (Sisters is a great walking-around town). Maybe Newberry (another volcanic caldera like Crater Lake). Stop along the Mackenzie on the drive. The Oregon coast is a bit depressing IMO.

FYI, there is a big track meet there the weekend of June 19-22 so hotel rooms will be hard to come by and way more expensive than usual those days.

We're doing OR coast +Bend flying in/out of Portland but Eugene can get you to a lot of pretty places. Look at Bend, Umpqua and the coast. If I were you I'd drive up the coast from Eugene and fly out of Portland if possible. Def a beautiful state.

There was just another Oregon thread on here that's worth checking out.

Bend is due east on the other side of the mountains, and you can't go wrong with anywhere on the coast. Crater Lake could work, too, but not enough time to do all three.

Depending your kid's interests, you could do a day trip rafting the McKenzie River, drive a few hours over to the coast and check out the Pacific Ocean, or do a hike to the one of the many hot springs around (https://www.eugenecascadescoast.org/blog/post/guide-to-hot-springs-in-the-cascades/)

Another option would be to drive down to Ashland and catch a show at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and then do the Oregon Caves or dip into Northern California for some redwood time.

Any chance he's also interested in OSU? Corvallis is within an hour or Eugene. I guess they are very different schools but just in case. OSU has a very nice campus.

Don't waste time in Seattle--too far. Plenty to do on the coast or east of Eugene. Pick water or forest and go for it. You could fly out of Portland but I wouldn't waste any time there. If you search "oregon" on this site there have been many discussions of itineraries that you can get ideas of what interests you.

Good Morning, we will be taking our son to visit the University of Oregon this summer (late June). We plan on being on campus for a day or two, but we'd like to make a little vacation out of it. Maybe 5 days total. Does anyone have some ideas on an itinerary? Is there enough to do in and around Eugene? Do we head to the coast? Do we head inland? Do we head north to Seattle? We are open to flying out of another city. We don't really have a budget. We'd never been to the Pacific NW so we'd love to take advantage of the opportunity. Thank you in advance.
