We have been given permission to give 0s if students don't show up for the final exam. I teach a HS level math course where the final is worth 10%. If a student misses it without making prior arrangements, they get a 0. If they put forth a legitimate attempt, the lowest I can give is a 50, but skipping is 0.

OP, just talk to your child's teachers and find out. If scheduling it over the summer is not a hardship though, that's probably the better option.

In algebra/foreign language there may be a final exam or project to get the high school credit. Check the syllabus and verify with the teachers.

My kids' English class is starting to read The Taming of the Shrew. They have a quiz on the Globe Theatre this week. But his Teachers covered new material in ES, this is nothing new. I think some of the Honors classes use the time to cover additional extensions that are not tested on the SOL. My kid is in a foreign language and Algebra 1 H, so he has finals in those classes that they are working toward.

I would not be counting on being able to miss much school. It could be different at your childs school.

Depends on the subject but I honestly think the surgery is fine OP. He may miss some fun content the teachers didn’t teach before because it’s not on the test, but nothing bad is going to happen.

We have had surgery in the last week of school before. There are tests sometimes, but if it’s surgery you can contact the teacher and schedule the test in advance. Usually they don’t do anything on the last day of school, if that works for you.

No, there is a lot of additional curriculum that will be covered after the SOL. But you will get several posters on here claiming that their child just watched movies all day long for a month. In my opinion, I think it is important to show your child that you should respect school attendance and learning and wait to schedule the elective procedure.
