Sorry, didn't actually answer your question. We're Japanese and put them on top of soba (buckwheat) noodles. It's heavenly.

Every month or so I do a 72 hour sardine challenge. Only sardines for 72 hours. This helps me keep my weight stable and revs up my metabolism. By the end I am ready to eat something else but this makes me feel amazing.

Sardines on toast is such an easy meal, as is a tin of sardines in tomato sauce over rice... There's all kinds of fun flavors now (preserved lemon, piri piri, olive and herbs...). Relatively cheap, low mercury, great protein. What's not to love about sardines?!
