OP here:

The family room has French doors, so I need curtains/panels.

The adjacent kitchen has a window over the sink framed by cabinets, and I currently have a valance (to add color and soften the look of wood cabinets). The kitchen also has a bump out window that is floor to ceiling at an angle like a skylight. It’s unusual and too big/open to not cover, but impossible to hang curtain panels or shades. I currently have 5 valances on it.

I think I’ll need to bite the bullet and pay for custom.

PS one nice thing about going and looking at the fabric books is they are usually in collections that coordinate nicely. So you can find a book that might have something for your valences, curtains, and round table. Bam.

I don’t know where you live, but if you take the rug sample and the paint sample and a couch cushion cover to Will’s Home Decorating in Hyattsville, you can go through all the fabric books and order your curtains. The owner is super friendly and welcoming. So I know it’s not the only place you can do this sort of thing, but it’s a place I can recommend.

I see now the colorful material (which I love) is for curtains or valance.

I would worry that just cream and navy is going to look very plain, especially since the rug and sofa are casual.

What about a bistro table in place of the skirted end table?

But I do like the idea of the colorful new cover with colorful throw pillows.

Good point! I’ll definitely add color with throw pillows and art.

I’m open to color in the valances in the kitchen. I’m not a fan of yellow (moving away from our creamy yellow walls and want a change).

I might think about swapping out the end table if you have the money for another item. The skirted tables look dated and I think they aren’t very functional. I’d prefer an end table with storage or at least a lower shelf, or alternatively one that would double as a laptop table for working on the couch. But if not, here is a company that sells simple linen ones. If there is a color in your couch cushions it might be fun to pull that color out, since you have a very neutral palette otherwise. I like coral with white/navy, or a green can work as well.

I’d love to replace the skirted table but the couches are the issue: the PB Charleston sofas have really high arms, so a normal height end table will be like 12-16 inches lower than the armrest. That means the lamp will be too low compared to the sofa and practically speaking you can’t easily put down a drink, remote, etc.

I need curtains for the actual family room plus valances for the adjacent kitchen. They don't need to match, but they should coordinate.

The kitchen table is a medium wood with black chairs (very traditional). Cabinets are the ugly 80s orangey brown wood but they look rather French country (that's how the previous owners rolled).
