How old are your kids?
There are no consequences. MCPS has no consequences so kids pretty much do whatever they want

In our MS there are consequences. Phones are confiscated and parents have to come pick them up. Sometimes, parents ask if they can keep them at the school extra time. There has been strong compliance every since the first couple of weeks of school, when lots of phones were confiscated.

Agree, HS should be away all day like MS.

Maybe there’s a checkpoint the the beginning of the day and all kids put phones in a box.

If a kid is caught with one it goes to the office and parent has to pick it up.
It’s awesome.
Mcps should do the same thing.

My kid also did a moco rec camp last summer and on the website it said no cell phones. On the first day I asked about DD walking home by herself and they said it’s fine as long as she texts me and they can see I responded it’s ok. I said I thought they weren’t allowed phone. Counselor said, they’re not supposed to but they do.

Public or private school?

Really sad with the new policy. Wish all secondary schools were using Yondr pouches but that would take too much work for MCPS staff I guess.

Some teachers expect kids to have and use phone. Teachers use them. I don’t see the point in this except for show.

This was the rule at the high school where I work at the beginning of the year. The first month or so it seemed to be enforced. Now, not at all.

My middle school kid kept it in his locker in 6th grade and it hasn’t been enforced since then.

My ES kid once called me FROM class from her friend’s Apple Watch.

Right. I read the email and I was confused because what they articulated is already the policy and guess what? It’s not enforced. The policy isn’t the problem. Enforcement is.

OP, you're the type to complain no matter what.

Raise your kids right, you won't have problems. The other kids are going to do what they're going to do. Yours need to not get distracted, keep their heads down and graduate. This is what public school is all about.

At my kid's high school, the phones are already supposed to be put away. There are shoe racks where phones sit during tests. Mostly it's not an issue. The tardies are always going to tardy.

How will it be enforced? Bad idea to let high school kids use phones in-between classes. At my high school we already have way too many kids strolling in late to class. Now there will be an epidemic of tardy arrivals which seriously disrupts class flow and learning. MCPS and many parents are in denial of how many kids are addicted to their phones.
