Can someone help me make sense of the MAP--M "numbers and operations" category, what it actually covers in middle elementary (2nd/3rd grade), and what struggling in that category means?
My kid, after 75th-90th percentile MAP math scores in K and 1st, has really stagnated since then, going from a 193 in fall of 2nd to a 199 in winter of 3rd, down to the 58th percentile. Looking closer at the subscores, this seems to be largely driven by the "Numbers and Operations" category, which has fallen from high to average to now low (we got the exact number for fall of 3rd from her teacher-- 179-- but besides that just the categories on the reports.). She is usually either high average or high in the other categories (occasionally average on Operations and Algebraic Thinking.)
Any ideas on what this might mean? Does falling from high to low scores in this area at this age mean there's something fundamental she's struggling with and if so what might that be? I assume it wouldn't be due to exposure factors, right? (We don't supplement but her class seems to be on track with where they're supposed to be.) Is there anything about the questions they ask in this category that might mean she's more likely to guess or make errors that are more a function of the test than her actual capabilities?
(For the record, outside testing she has always done well in math although not a super-star-- she was in the more advanced math group this year and got mostly As with the occasional B, has always gotten the "receives enrichment in mathematics," etc. When I asked her teacher about it in the fall she said the scores were lower than she would expect based on what she sees in class.)
