Plyometrics are known to increase ankle strength and prevent ankle injuries. There is no guarantee that you completely avoid ankle injuries by doing plyometrics, so your athlete still needs to be careful no matter how much s/he exercises. I didn't know the answer regarding shin splits, but I was curious. With the caveat that I am not a physical therapist and you should not take advice from an anonymous forum, here is a video that I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUIgP0yyrdw. There are several in the series and it appears that plyometrics may even help as you recover from shin splints (see the 4th video in the series).

My volleyball playing DD has trained t at Healthy Baller in Rockville and likes it very much.

What kind of training do they do? My rising 9th grader has a gym membership and goes and does some workout exercises that she thinks help her (I think mostly leg training type stuff, combined with cardio and core)....but wondering if there are specific exercises that are recommended for volleyball -- either for reducing injury or increasing skills.

Plyometrics are really good to both increase the vertical and prevent injury. You don't need gym membership for most of them. But there only this much you can grow from plyometrics alone. Cardio and core are always good. Weight lifting is also useful, but you want to go for the type of exercises that increase speed and agility. You want to lift larger and larger weights, but that's not the main goal in volleyball.

This may not be what you wanted to hear, but I don't want you to feel unheard. I spend enough money for club volleyball and I don't feel like spending more on strength an vertical training. My DD enjoys the game, but she is not willing to do this kind of extra work. I am willing to pay for gym, but the membership will likely go unused. She is too busy with homework or she is very good at pretending to be busy with homework when she doesn't want to do something. We agreed on some daily plyometric exercises at some point to prevent injury / increase her vertical but "homework" got in the way. You are lucky if your DD is willing to put in the extra work.

My DD is going into 9th grade and wants to improve her upper body strength and raise her vertical this summer. Does anyone have recommendations for places or trainers in MoCo that may be able to help? She’s also open to online training or a specialized training exercise program.
