It won't be an exaggeration to say that Mariam and piety are synonymous for muslims.

101%. According to Islam, she was the chosen person for immaculate birth and her son was a major prophet with a holy book and would come back from heaven to save humans. She was an ideal woman in her conduct and would have the highest level among women in heaven. She is called Mariam and its a very popular and respected name among muslims seen as someone of high virtue and grace.

Why would ISIS destroy the tomb of Jonah in Iraq?

The same reason KKK lynched black Christians.

IN those days virginity was a very big deal. So, I'm guessing that being a virgin mother was even a biigger deal

Jesus’ mother is an historical figure. Only Catholics believe she was a virgin and Jesus her only child.

She is revered and respected. From the Quran, one can gather that:

• she was a righteous woman from her birth
• her mother prayed for her and pledged her to god when she was in the womb.
• she was raised by the prophet Zechariah
• her blood is back to the prophet mosses.
• was faithful and obedient her whole life.
• God chose her and purified her above all the women of the worlds
• the known miracle of Mary was giving birth of Jesus while she is a virgin, also from the story we learn she had a provision from god but the how is not mentioned in details. as she mentioned ("It is from God. Indeed, God provides for whom He wills without account.") as an answer to Zechariah after he asked her "form where you got this"
• the angels spook to her in different versus and she saw one as the Maryam story mentioned.
• she is the mother of prophet Jesus.
• God mentions her as a good example for a faithful woman to the believers.

Mary or Maryam is the only lady whose name has been mentioned 34 times in the Quran in 12 chapters. There is an entire chapter with her name to honor her and refute all the false accusations made against her.

“And [mention] when the angels said, ‘O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.’”
— Quran (3:42)

Mary is a very special person in Islam and considered one of the best, if not the best, woman to have ever lived.

One chapter of the Qur'an is entitled "Maryam" (Mary). A portion of her story is also told in another chapter, Al-Imran (family of Imran), which mentions her upbringing and also her parents' desire to have a pious child. She is mentioned by name in several other places in the Qur'an.
