Kilmer AA has kids reading novels. Not as many as one would expect/hope for but they read them--mostly in class. Kilmer regular English only has them reading for Independent Reading projects.

Cooper middle school the kids read 2 books of their choosing for Independent Reading Projects (4 for 8th grade). They also read at least 2 other books as part of the class (not sure if the whole class reads the same books, or if kids are put into book groups).

Our lower-mid SES school, the teacher read a single novel to the class. Reading was optional. Honors English. Disappointing.

I know DS read part of the Outsiders at home but they didn’t give them the physical book, the chapters were on schoology. Some of his friends parents bought the book for their kid to make reading easier. We asked if he wanted the book but he was fine reading on his computer at his desk.

Wow. Did not know that. I HATE having kids read novels online. How does FCPS think this is fine? Ugh.

I understand that this is only for a minority of people but, reading on a screen is easier for me. I have dyslexia and the way the text renders on the screen is different than on a page. It is easier for me to read off the screen because of how I process. Kindle actually has a font for people who are dyslexic which adds a bit of “ink” to the bottoms of letters that helps “weight” the letters so they stay in place better. Like I said, I know that this is only helpful for a small group of people.

I believe that you can ask the Teacher for a copy of the text book or novel in any class and they will provide it but the days of handing out books that are easily destroyed is long gone. A typical novel was destroyed in backpacks when we ere in school, replacing them is expensive. Like I said, DS had friends whose parents either took the book out of the library or purchased the book for their kid. There are easy work arounds if you think about it.

8th grade AAP. They did read novels. They also read some Edgar Allen Poe. They read the Lottery. Good thoughtful time tested literature.

7th grade AAP at Carson. I know they read the Outsiders and they are going to be reading Taming of the Shrew. Outsiders was read in class and at home, Taming of the Shrew will be read as a class in school. I don’t know what they read for their Non-Fiction section.

Do they read full novels/plays/books to discuss and analyze in aap or honors for middle school? I know they don’t for elementary usually since not in benchmark. Please specify honors or aap too, also interested in Kilmer and Thoreau but interested in other schools too.
