It’s usually for red shirted kids. We sent my September birthday daughter (cut off 9/30) because full on K would have been a real challenge for her as an older 4/almost 5 year old and the youngest kid in class. It has worked out great—still a lot of the same curriculum as K but much smaller class size and way more playing than what our older DS experienced in K.

The Harbor School in Potomac has a really great one! They call it Junior Kindergarten or JK. Small class, playful learning, great communication, huge emphasis on social emotional learning. It’s a lovely small community.
