I recommend looking at group training. The league teams and even many of the AAU teams will end up having your kid in a daddy ball situation.

In private schools, most schools do some version of a couple college camps and either something like DMV or similar in June for the varsity teams. There often isn’t anything for JV players.

The public schools do summer leagues for rising freshman and separate leagues for JV.

Kinda. When my kid was choosing between a big public school basketball powerhouse and a magnet school. He visited the big school in March and asked to meet the coach. He was invited to a workout and offered a spot on the team after the workout, then invited to spring workouts and summer league. He didn’t play varsity until the end of freshman year. So not every rising freshman is recruited, but they are typically invited.

When my kid played, first game was in mid June (which is before the end of the school year). League was publics and privates, games were held at DeMatha IIRC.

*big thing, meaning that it’s a good way to connect with coaches and other kids either already on the team or hoping to make the team.

Privates too. Summer league is a bit thing and tons of fun for the kids.

Is there a decent basketball team or league for a 9th grader that plays over the summer only? Ideally something a little more competitive than rec, but rec would be fine if it's a decent program. Looking for something fun, not one of those faux-AAU programs that lose every game, have no-show coaches, and yet still infuse the program with crazy drama and intensity basically squeezing all the fun out of the experience. We don't need a program that takes your money under the pretense that they are training your kid to be a D1 starter someday.
