I made an appointment and then canceled it when I learned that it wouldn't change the expiration date. I'll do it in 2026, when my current license expires. Until then, I have a passport

Well, it was the weekend and I couldn't. I gave up and I'm not going to bother with it. I'm in VA fwiw.

I might try again--I had no problem booking an appointment online for mine. May have just been a glitchy day?

Voting is not a federal action. It's a state/local action.

States send legislators to Congress and Electors to the Electoral College.

As 17:14 said, it's not an issue. This whole REAL ID thing is nonsense. If it were actually about security and safety, the government would not have taken 18 years to enforce it.

Voting. You wanna make elderly poor folks get the docs to get a passport so they can vote?

I have a passport. I have no intention of getting a REAL ID.

It's an issue because Real ID requires a lot more documentation about who you are and where you live. The government wants that information.

? The information required for the Real ID are government documents. I didn't tell them anything they didn't already know.

OP - it's an issue because even people who never fly, might need to suddenly. My mom was on one flight my entire childhood and that was to fly for a funeral.

That situation has not moved the needle for a friend and my FIL who are afraid of flying. Weddings and funerals did not change issues. My spouse was hospitalized. Did not move the needle. I know others like this. For some it is a cost issue. Others a hassle issue.

I hear what you’re saying but these people don’t need real id.

Because 50% of Americans don't have a passport. My guess is rates in VA are slightly higher, but that still means 25% of state residents don't have an ID they can use for flying or entering some federal facilities.

I have real ID and a passsport, but if I didn’t, I don’t see why it would matter unless I wanted to fly. For every day life, my regular drivers license (or state ID) would suffice. I don’t know why a lack of real Id is an issue.

It’s not an issue. Just get a passport and the passport card. Now you’ve got three forms of ID you can travel with.
