If they're not fighting, a natural end point would be after graduation. That way the end of the school year isn't made awkward.

This is diplomacy 101. Kids would do well to exercise that muscle.

But... wasn't she going to go anyway, with or without a male companion?

It's nothing to do with anyone else, fighting, etc. The significant other is def more smitten (and so my DC is feeling a bit of pressure to be "serious") and is a really nice person. My DC does not want to hurt that person or ruin eoy celebrations.

Then that's the answer. Just be nice and hang out with groups of friends as much as possible.

After. If they aren’t fighting, awkward/uncomfortable around each other, or wanting to date someone new, they can still go the prom as friends and hang out in a group.

Wait and break up in the summer. Breaking up right before prom seems mean. But maybe ensure that even going together it’s with a big group and not just 1x1

After, as long as staying in the relationship doesn't feel horribly disingenuous. Before could ruin end of year for both.

If your teen's bf/gf is planning to break up with your teen, would you want them to do it right before prom and grad or after? There is not problems, they're not fighting, etc. Both are nice kids. But one has outgrown the relationship and they will be apart in the fall for college. In terms of "don't make one pay for prom and then dump them crowd", which I'm expecting, the kids are both contributing to prom expenses.
