If they're not fighting, a natural end point would be after graduation. That way the end of the school year isn't made awkward.

After. If they aren’t fighting, awkward/uncomfortable around each other, or wanting to date someone new, they can still go the prom as friends and hang out in a group.

Wait and break up in the summer. Breaking up right before prom seems mean. But maybe ensure that even going together it’s with a big group and not just 1x1

If your teen's bf/gf is planning to break up with your teen, would you want them to do it right before prom and grad or after? There is not problems, they're not fighting, etc. Both are nice kids. But one has outgrown the relationship and they will be apart in the fall for college. In terms of "don't make one pay for prom and then dump them crowd", which I'm expecting, the kids are both contributing to prom expenses.
