Headstart saves money long-term by enabling economically disadvantaged kids (of any ethnicity) to succeed and graduate HS and obtain gainful employment. It is much much much lower cost than having more people on life-long welfare…

There have been studies since at least the 80s that show that Head Start does nothing for kids. Their grades, life outcomes and future poverty rates are exactly the same as their peers who didn't go to Head Start. It is very simply a jobs and benefits program for adults.
I don't think federal money should go to a program that is perpetually failing at what is is supposed to do.

I just read this today, and it makes me furious. I’ve worked with HeadStart programs as well as primary schools, and I can’t say enough positive things about the experiences and resources that the programs provide their students and families.
This article described the closing of 5 of the 10 regional offices for the programs. There’s a map of the HeadStart programs that now no longer have regional offices, and the closures seem to heavily impact Blue state areas much more than they do Red state areas. The long term implications are staggering.

Please go back and read the post you are responding to. OP is a beneficiary of Head Start. Without Head Start she would probably not be a doctor. Without Head Start, a lot of these children will not have the opportunities she had.

I am very happy for you OP but there must have been something else about your mom and dad that you got out of poverty. Most head start babies unfortunately don’t make it (I’ll be happy to be wrong but I haven’t seen the statistics to the contrary). Also wheres the evidence it is used by parents to get out of poverty?
