I would prioritize my kid over my mother for this.

Why are you so triggered and judgmental? You don’t know all the circumstances about the mother’s visit or timing.

I went to my orientation by myself and was fine with it. If her son is okay with it, then she should be okay too.

Which school is this? Some schools have worthwhile programming for parents. I know BC does -- my sister took her son last year and raved about it, which isn't really like her. Find out what the program offers parents before you skip out.

If this is your first child going to college and you want that experience and memory, then change your plans and go with him. Otherwise, he’s fine going alone. He’s staying in the dorm so he’ll love the independence of hanging out with his new school mates and exploring campus.

My kid said it was fine if we skipped and that ended up being a mistake as she was the only person there without a parent (or so we heard from her). She's a few years in and hasn't let us forget it (just in a jokey way but still, it was a thing when it happened). Lesson learned!

I would let my kid do it if I felt they could handle the drive. Not sure if they can check into a hotel if they’re not yet 18 though.

Many students go alone. I would be fine with it.

Do you think it is a big deal? I cannot go as my mom will be in town. Ds signed up to stay in dorm but it is only one night (between day 1 and 2). So since we are a good 4 hours away he will have to drive the evening before and stay at a hotel.
