Maybe help him understand that soccer is a fun hobby and not his entire identity, and it was ALWAYS going to end, either now or when he graduated college.

However if you've helped him make it his entire identity up until now, it's a little late for this wisdom.

If he gets cut and wants to play he goes to the portal. Depending on level of DI he Will likely have to accept being picked up by DII or going DIII

It all depends on why he chose to attend that school. If it was only to play soccer then he should try to transfer. If he also likes the school for academics, then he should stay at a school he likes and play club or not play soccer.

This should serve as a good warning for parents. If you choose a college only for soccer you put your kid at significant risk if they get cut or injured or don't want to play anymore. Make sure the school is also an academic fit.

I quit soccer my sophomore year in college. I kept going to school, got a part time job, and played soccer with all my old soccer friends who were going through the same thing. That’s how it goes.

He plays on the school's club team, most likely.

I often wonder if crazy soccer parents (not necessarily saying you're one of them, OP) realize that after high school, and for a select few after college, soccer does go away. Sure you can play in adult leagues but like... transferring schools to play on a different lower division soccer team? Is college just the next step in soccer achievement? What about after college?

Like, the obsession with getting into an Ivy I also think is kind of tiring (because it's like... ok, you're at princeton, now what? you keep attending class and then graduate and get a job like everyone else) but I understand it more, because of the link to higher paying jobs and a stronger education and a more intelligent peer group while in college. But... chasing soccer at age 20, as someone who is getting cut from their D1 team? The glory days are over, kid. You were probably a standout at age 10, and that's great that you enjoyed soccer through your youth, but like... competitive soccer is over for you. Hope you didn't pour your entire identity into it over the past decade. But for some of these parents and kids, they absolutely did.

Brutal truth- I don't see a point in transferring... he'd be at the bottom of that team and next to be cut next year. If he still has a passion for it, do club.

I’m sorry. DS wanted to play college but has come to the realization it’s not going to work out. Throughout our discussions, I have worried if he would mentally be able to handle the pressure and what he’d do if he found himself benched or cut. My heart goes out to your son. No matter how old our kids are, we want to support them. Maybe he can move to another school or play club if he’s happy where he is.

Club. If he gets cut, it was VERY unlikely that he was going to play beyond college.

Definitely I am letting him figure out his own life - but I'm curious what kids are doing. If one tiny school is cutting 20 kids, they have to be going somewhere.

I’m sorry. My son is going to be a freshman next year and the idea of getting cut is incredibly painful. Sending good wishes to you both.

With the new roster limitations, what do you do? My son's team is cutting nearly half the roster this week. He wants to keep playing soccer. If he gets cut, what are his options? He's a sophomore.
