Why Santiago? Chile is great but Santiago is a real dud as a LA capital city.

"Just down the street from the Estadio Olimpico, the Celinto Catayente Towers. It's quite a fine example, in fact. I recommend that next time you're up that way that you drop in and take a gander at it yourself."
Take the cable car up the cerro or hike either or both of them, San Cristobal and Santa Lucia.
The main plaza and Hidalgo castle are neat also.

The Giratorio revolving restaurant has good food and spectacular views of downtown. It takes 90 mins to make a full rotation.

Try to get in a day trip to Valparaiso and Vina Al Mar! You're going to love Chile. Santiago has great wineries nearby, too.

It’s been many years since I went but there used to be a fabulous open air market where people from the Andes sold lots of handicrafts.

The museum that recounts the overthrow of Allende and the subsequent military control and the people who "disappeared" during the regime is really good. In a different part of town there's an art museum located in the former HQ of the former govt.'s Stasi-type secret police--it's kind of spooky but poignant, in a really beautiful house in an otherwise regular neighborhood near the university. Also went to a soccer game at the big public stadium there. The metro stations are nice; good way to get around town.
