This was my thought OP. I did interviews at a place that said it was "moving quickly" (tho fewer rounds than you, sounds like) then radio silence for a long time and I assumed it was over. Then I suddenly got a call and it moved very fast. I think they had another top candidate who they picked but it fell through. But whatever, I have been in this job for a few yrs and have never asked.

I guess you can hold out hope but real ghosting bluntly sucks.

They might not be done interviewing candidates, or they've recommended you for hire but the process is slow and they need to work through the internal stuff before presenting an offer to you.

It does seem to be a new normal and it really sucks. It doesn't take much effort to send a "thanks, but we've gone in another direction" email. That's it. It closes the door firmly for whatever reason, but at least then candidates KNOW.

You never know…

Same thing happened to me. Went through four rounds of interviews, including three final in-person interviews, and no one ever got back to me either way. Follow up emails to the recruiter contact received no reply. I can’t believe this is how top companies operate! I can see maybe nothing after a screening interview, but to he a finalist and then not hear back at all is incredibly disappointing.

Yes, it's more the norm, even for multiple interviews. You can try reaching out to the recruiter and asking. It's a little more unusual when you came in person. Did they fly you out?

My former place of employment (I'm retired now but was in academia for 10 years) never did follow-ups either for faculty or staff which I thought was rather rude. I hated being on search committees because of that. IDK if admin positions got follow-up.

Is this the norm now? I had multiple rounds of interviews for a position, culminating in an in person interview. Weeks later I have heard nothing. This wasn’t just a quick online application either, I had to submit a writing sample and tailored cover letter. I used my network to connect with someone at the company and did an informational interview for background. And I thought the interviews went well, although I understand that it’s a tight market and that another candidate must have been a better fit. Still frustrating to get zero follow-up though.
