Yes you tip.

This is the reason I don't go to hair stylists. I don't have any trouble affording it, I just don't like the business model of tipping so I try to avoid places that require it. I'm not sure why my botox injector isn't tipped, but a hair stylist is? I'm just sick of being nickel and dimed everywhere and tips have exploded at fast food places as well (like Subway!).

Forego the service and do your own hair. Good lord.

There’s mass unemployment and more coming. I would be more than happy whether base pay rather than losing a customer who could no longer afford to tip.

If she wants 120% then she should change her rate. Which she can easily do since she’s the owner.

Well her choice is either getting business from OP or not. Would she rather get $100 or $0? If she NEEDS $120, then she should make that her price. She gets all of the money, she's not an employee or independent contractor but rather a sole proprietor.

I was always told you don’t tip the salon owner. I consider this a salon owner. She gets 100% of the pay. It’s not like a waiter. It’s like tipping the restaurant owner after the meal.

Disagree on this. Hairstylists pay relies on tips. It’s one of the few professions, IMO, that you should tip (another being a restaurant server). You don’t think your stylist is feeling a pinch from our current economy too?

Agree, I think if someone chose to stay loyal to me even while struggling to afford it, I would let it go and feel a bit of empathy. Hair is a luxury and spending money at a salon is one of the first things to be cut from the budget, so stylists should be grateful for the work. If she wants a 20% tip on top of the regular fee, then she should charge 120% and not expect any tip.

I pay cash to the person who does DDs hair. DD is AA, she does it in a salon in her basement. So no tip but always cash.

My hair dresser at hair cuttery ( I’m white so just a basic trim) I tip every time.

I’m struggling to pay the mortgage. So really, after giving someone 20% for ten years you don’t understand skipping a tip once. Gosh, I guess I should do my own hair.

I’ve been going to the same hairdresser for about fifteen years. She has always rented her own space as an independent stylist. So she’s the owner basically and all the money goes to her, as well as the expenses for renting her little closet sized space. So recently my husband was DOGE’d and we lost 2/3rds of our income. I went to have my hair done and when it came time to pay I apologized and said I couldn’t tip for the time being as we are really in a bind. (Yes i still have to have my hair done for my job to look presentable). Anyway, I always figured that I was being very generous by tipping an independent contractor anyway. But she seemed kind of taken aback …. Thoughts? Do you tip salon owners?
