Yes, he has lowered El Salvador's crime rate. As many on here have said many times: he has also suspended due process, routinely has people arrested without cause, and secretly (while loudly denying it) made deals with the gangs, which included favoring and even releasing the gang leaders while they were committing massacres, while incarcerating the lower level people. One of these leaders,César Humberto López Larios , is a violent criminal (released by Bukele from jail as part of a secret deal) whom the US has worked very hard to capture, have extradited from Mexico, and convict. He was about to give testimony about his deals with Bukele in the US. But Bukele came up with the fun idea of having Trump pay him to hold prisoners and why not throw in a few Salvadorans while he was at it. Obviously the guy can't blab from a concentration camp.

To be fair to Trump, he probably didn't know anything about the guy. Let's face it, Trump is clueless. he doesn't even look at the news anymore to know how clueless everyone is realizing he is. Bukele is actually a bright (manipulative and conniving ) guy.

People from Venezuela came with temporary protected status, so yes, legal. And you can certainly apply for asylum once you are here. You think everyone who applies for asylum came illegally? This is the worst part of what's going on with immigration--the majority of Americans do not have a clue.

Salvadorans are paying the price for less crime: less freedom, no due process, less civil rights, etc… the US on the other hand is a country of LAWS and a constitution that must be respected. Big difference.

So does this mean that he didn't follow through with his contract to hold our prisoners for 20k/year. The US should get a refund for the amount of prison time that was not used.

Bukele is a master manipulator and an opportunist. He is getting criticized heavily for holding the Venezuelans for Trump, many (probably most) of whom are entirely innocent so he has found a way to present himself as a humanitarian, defend himself by pretending they are gang members, taunt Maduro, and make a mockery of Trump in one fell swoop! Why not announce a prisoner swap with Maduro on Twitter asking for the Venezuelan despot's political prisoners, one for each one of the falsely accused Venezuelans. Bukele is a hero: he frees innocent men everywhere! Win and Win for Bukele. Everyone loves a liberator.

Now if the Maduro can't help himself and refuses to release his enemies, autocrat that he is, Maduro looks so mature.
