Union college is near the Berkshires. Hobart and William Smith College has Bristol Mountain about 40 minutes away.

HC is a great school but alas the HC troll over rotates once again. The idea that HC Econ graduates have better outcomes than Middlebury graduates is laughable. Both great schools but someone needs to calm down.

+1 Very nice campus, strong academics, and good merit. DD got $38K off, bringing the COA to $52k. She turned it down but it was a strong contender.

St Lawrence is a great alternative. Skiing is no issue and there are several outdoors clubs. Environmentally oriented with merit. You can’t lose.

Following up to my Hartwick post, I know it is quite a way below Middlebury academically but that might help with getting merit aid.

I think Hartwick has a Jan. term and is near skiing in the Catskills. It is tiny (1,100 undergrads). I'm guessing they might offer merit but not sure.

Have a look at Holy Cross slightly easier to get accepted. HC economics majors have better outcomes than Midd and the campus is 20 minutes away from the best ski area in Massachusetts.

What are schools similar to Middlebury BUT offer merit aid? DS interested in environmental science & economics/business, being close to outdoor activities (especially skiing!), smaller but not too small, and Jan Term is a plus. Thinking St. Lawrence, UVM, and Whitman - what are other suggestions? Looking to bring the costs down to 70k for a full pay family.
