You might actually make money selling a used car depending on tariff activity. You are unlikely to lose much, certainly nothing close to the cost of a short term lease or long term rental.

You didn't say whether this was just because your kids have their license and want to drive around, or because they have jobs/internships and NEED to drive. If the former, I would never buy or rent another car. If the latter, I would do my utmost to see if public transportation can get them where they need to go - and indeed, I would have had them take transportation into account during the job search.

If you absolutely need an extra car, I would lease a car that you drive, and lend the family cars to your children. People I know who have bought really cheap cars have always regretted it, and I certainly wouldn't trust a teen or young adult's safety in one of those cars. My friend recently found this out when she bought a used car - it turned out the car had been in an accident, and the engine had never been correctly reattached.

We bought a beater and sold it. Our other experiences have been sharing and using public transportation.

We just bought a car for $2,500 that fits this description. We have two kids in college and need one more car (for a total of four) for about 8-10 weeks each of the next two summers. Very happy with our plan. We looked into long term rentals but they don’t cover drivers this age as far as we saw. We plan to sell the beater at the end of next summer when (hopefully) things settle down in the economy/job market.

I’m renting a car for 10 weeks through enterprise. It’s about $600 per month. Not great but $1500 for what I need is worth it for the summer

One summer when we were all home and were two extra drivers, my parents bought a used car and then sold it at the end of the summer. They ended up selling it for the same price they paid. I only remember because they still talk about what a great idea it was.

We will have 5 drivers this summer and we will really don’t want to buy another car - long term rental is massively expensive and the shortest lease term I see is 24 months. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks
