Also college is pretty young for this. There might be medical treatments which will help his self-esteem

sounds good to me OP

Men removing hats is considered a sign of respect in mainstream American culture. Men take their hat off for the national anthem, when going indoors in a formal place, and for church.

Having said that, I think that many Catholic parents of teenagers and young adults know that it's a blessing when they continue to choose to attend, and would appreciate if he chooses to attend in the hat, vs. staying home without it.

People wear all sorts of stuff to mass. Pretty much all priests want full pews, particularly with younger people over a dress code.

Not appropriate. You could get away with a fedora if you sit in the back.

DS is deeply insecure about his hair situation. He wears a ball cap basically everywhere. He is home from college and skittish about going to church because of his severely balding hair, making it hard to style. I was going to go out and buy him a nice elegant beanie (cashmere?) in a neutral color. Would a boy wearing a beanie (hat) while dressed in slacks, sport coat and button down shirt for Easter Mass be in any way inappropriate?
