Lots of police stations specifically tell you to do your in-person meetups for online trades at the police station.

There's no reason not to ask, if it's not something they offer then they'll say no. No harm no foul.

CarMax. There is no way I’d take the risk of FB Marketplace or private sale of any type to get a few extra dollars. My safety is worth more than the additional money I might get.

Yeah, seems the police's only job is to extort money from the public and selectively enforce ludicrous laws on select groups of people.

Police are mostly worthless now, and if they wouldn't help in a situation like this, let them know it and hell with them.

I have sold a couple old cars to NICO Buys Cars, which is about the same as Carmax.

Carmax or some other company. Not a person. Even selling as is if the front wheel falls off and they get injured they will sue you. Even if you don't lose, it's a hassle you don't need.

OP, make sure your KBB valuation is correct. From what you describe, your car is in “Fair” condition, maybe the low end with the paint and body appearance. Compare the low end private party price with the low end trade in value. Decide if that difference in price is worth the hassle of selling car privately.
