We are in Northern VA. DC was accepted to VA Tech also. Wise is about 2 hours or more beyond Blacksburg and kid will not have a car.

It is a good option. When neighbor kid did it recently, the kids in Wise who were headed for C'ville bonded and became good friends. The transition to the main campus was smooth and they already had friends from their year at Wise.

Their main tip was to use the time in Wise to try to get the correct prerequisites done, mandatory A&S classes like English Writing and also whatever was needed for the 2nd year courses in their intended major.

They also came back with a much deeper understanding of how much better off the average family in NoVA is compared with an average family in Appalachia. I also noticed they were more tolerant and understanding of strangers.

Student was waitlisted for College of Arts and Sciences and is thinking about doing the year in Wise with auto transfer to main campus for 2nd year. Has anyone’s kid done this or are they considering it? DC is also considering another school and decision needs to be made by May 1.

Thoughts? It’s far.
