Unfortunately I would have gotten the current arrangement in writing from OldBoss. But now I would talk to him and explain the current situation you have, that it works, and ask his thoughts.

If he refuses give it a week. You can handle a shitty life for a week. Then on Friday AM I would go in and say something like “Unfortunately these hours are extremely untenable for me, and if my position has changed to require these hours I will need to give you my two weeks notice. Knowing this, how would you like to proceed?”

But only do that if you’re literally willing to walk over it with zero notice. If you’re not willing to walk and he’s not willing to compromise, then you’re SOL because this is your job now.

What are your office hours now? I don't know why you're making these assumptions about him when it sounds like nothing has been said.

But the reality is, your commute isn't his problem.

My work understands people's lives are all different. Plus there are some long-term highway projects going on right now.

Our core in-office hours are 9-3, 3 days in office, 2 wfh.

We work early and late hours as needed to collaborate with Asia.

This is corporate work. In the Midwest. In a suburb. People do live 30-60 mins away.

Your ridiculous commute is not his problem. If he wants to daily 4pm meetings, you can see about moving it to 3pm. But it's not all about you. If the 4pm works better for everyone else, oh well.

Not his problem. Leaving a 9-5 every day at 4 is a big problem on YOUR part, even if you have been getting away with it.

I am 💯 in support of flexibility and benefitted from WFH but this is a you problem as stated above.

Work is work. Choose based on interest, fit, salary, opportunity, and even location but these are things we choose. An employer simply chooses for fit.

If his style, hours do not fit your life then you need to find a new job.

His commute is irrelevant to you. He could live in Timbuktu and have a range of wildly different expectations. Concerned you don't understand this...

Talk to him? I had a colleague who had a early work schedule. She would come in at 6am and leave at 2pm and do excellent work. We moved all our team meetings to accommodate that, and it worked out great.
